When getting ready for your appearance in Colorado DUI court, there’s more to think about than just making sure you show up on time. How you dress can have an impact on you are received by the court, so that’s a pretty big deal.

Most people aren’t sure what types of clothing are appropriate for court, and that’s OK. You’ve hopefully not had to show up in court much over the course of your life – so it’s natural not to be sure.

Here is what you need to consider when choosing your outfit for DUI court, so you can make sure you’re at your best before walking through those courtroom doors.

What Men Should Wear

If you’re a man, then you want to make sure you look as professional and neat as possible. If you have business attire, such as a suit, then wear it. If you don’t have a suit, a nice dress shirt with clean slacks should do the trick. If you’ve got a blazer, throw that on, too.

If you have piercings or tattoos, you should remove your piercings and try to cover your tattoos as much as possible. Limit your jewelry choices, too, and make sure your hair is neat. If you have facial hair, make sure it’s trimmed – and don’t go too crazy with the cologne.

What Women Should Wear

For a woman, there are a few more options when it comes to dressing for DUI court. The idea is essentially the same for women as it is for men: Look as professional as possible.

Make sure to choose a modest outfit, such as a pantsuit or long dress. If you don’t have those, then a nice blouse with a pair of dress pants or a skirt will work. You don’t want anything with a neckline that plunges too much. and you don’t want to go overboard with jewelry or makeup. Make sure your hair is neat and that any visible tattoos are covered as much as they can be.

Should You Wear a Certain Color?

Aside from the basic suggestions for your court wardrobe, you may also want to consider the colors to wear to court. It’s probably best to wear dark gray or navy blue to court, since people often associate colors like these with being serious – but they don’t have negative connotations like the color black.

It may be best to not wear really bright colors or patterns  to court, because they might be distracting. You want to wear something as uncontroversial and traditional as you can – the plainer it is, the better!

What You Shouldn’t Wear

It’s also important to touch on things that are best left in your closet on your court date. You never want to wear anything that is too casual or that makes you look unkempt, such as:

• Jeans
• Shorts
• T-shirts
• Flip flops
• Hats
• Ripped or dirty clothing
• Sunglasses

Basically, you never want to look like you showed up in court straight from the beach or a backyard barbeque. You want to look composed, serious, and like you’re ready to stand up for your rights.
